Booking Through Thursday - Abandoned Books

Today’s suggestion is from Cereal Box Reader

I would enjoy reading a meme about people’s abandoned books. The books that you start but don’t finish say as much about you as the ones you actually read, sometimes because of the books themselves or because of the circumstances that prevent you from finishing. So . . . what books have you abandoned and why?

Don’t forget to leave a link to your actual response (so people don’t have to go searching for it) in the comments—or if you prefer, leave your answers in the comments themselves!

I actually don't abandon many books. I was an English major in college so I really couldn't abandon anything I read then, and I think the habit has stuck. However, two books stick out in my mind that I have abandoned recently.

1. Girlfriend in a Coma by Douglas Coupland - I loved Microsurfs and couldn't get past the first 50 pages of this one. I think it put me in a coma.

2. Accordion Crimes by E. Annie Proulx - Again, I loved The Shipping News, but couldn't get past the first 20 pages of this one.

I'll be curious to read what other people have given up on.

i haven't heard of either of these books....though I have heard the song Girl Friend in a Coma by the Smiths!

I'm pretty much like you. I very rarely ever put a book down with out finishing it. It just doesn't seem right, ya know??

Strangely I loved Girlfriend in a Coma. I like most of his books though sometimes he gets irritating. I didn't enjoy Accordion Crimes, there's something about the way she writes that I don't like.

Interesting that they are both authors that you had previously enjoyed.

Btw, on an unrelated note, this guy http://stevezipp.blogspot.com/2007/10/canadian-book-challenge.html just joined the Canadian Book Challenge and is looking to send other participants copies of his book. If you're interested, you can let him know- there's an email in the above link. Cool, eh?

Hi, thanks for visiting...I did read The Lovely Bones and it was very very difficult in places. I don't think I could handle the movie either ... I also have trouble reading books where I know the character has lost his or her spouse. But I am mostly like you, I don't like to put down a book unless I absolutely am going crazy with boredom or agitation at dumb plot lines. :)

Hi there, Bookgal!
Thanks for visiting my blog and for all your good wishes.
I, too, had trouble with E. Annie after The Shipping News. I reckon I've actually abandoned more books than I thought - a lot of them are coming back to me since I started reading BTT today and all the comments! Perhaps I wipe them from my memory if they're too awful.

I didn't get through the Shipping News, either. For all my fancy degrees in English, I'm not much of a fan of literary fiction, it seems.

I don't often abandon books either, and usually if I do, I hope to try again someday.

Stephanie - I always wondered if that's where the title came from.

Crafty - My husband loved Girlfriend too. I think Proulx might be an acquired taste.

John - That's why the stick out on my mind so much.

Irish - I don't think I'd do well with a dead spouse either.

Lesley - These two were only memorable because I had enjoyed others by the same authors.

Literary - These two are lost causes for me!
