Booking Through Thursday

Since I wrote about the one in four article last week, this is a perfect BTT for me!

There was a widely bruited-about statistic reported last week, stating that 1 in 4 Americans did not read a single book last year. Clearly, we don’t fall into that category, but . . . how many of our friends do? Do you have friends/family who read as much as you do? Or are you the only person you know who has a serious reading habit?

This is interesting to think about because most of my friends are readers. I really can't think of anyone I know who hasn't told me about a book they've read during the past month or so. In fact, I was talking about books and audio books with someone at lunch today. As I'm getting my classroom ready to go back to school, there has been a lot of discussion about what books people enjoyed over the summer.

My husband probably reads almost as much as I do, as does my best friend. We exchange books all the time. One of my teacher friends is always recommending books, and we loan books back and forth. So, yes, I do know people who enjoy reading as much as I do.

I still think I read more than my parents ever have, and I probably read more than some of my friends who have small children. I can understand that one because it's a matter of time. Even the moms I know read at least something.

So I guess that's why I was so surprised at the statistics because I seem to be surrounded by readers.

I'm not surrounded by readers unfortunately. My answer is here: http://smsbookreviews.blogspot.com/2007/08/booking-through-thursday-statistics.html

You're so lucky to have so many friends/family members who read! I think that kind of network is so important.

Lucky you! Mine aren't avid readers, so that's why I'm glad there's internet and book blogs! ;)

Happy reading!

You're lucky to be surrounded by readers. I have my share of readers but I'm not surrounded by them.

In fairness to the college students, they have enough forced reading that they have to do but still...

I read for enjoyment when I was in college. It's sad that they don't.

Thanks all for visiting. I realize that I am blessed. I'm glad I got the chance to acknowledge these great people in my blog. I'm also really enjoying my new blog friends.

I think it's wonderful that your husband reads. I wish mine did -- maybe he would understand my addiction to books better then!

Thanks for visiting earlier. Happy BTT!

I'm a Mom but I still make time to read. I think you make time for the things that are important.

Marianne - It is nice ... he understands my fascination with bookstores.

Chris - I do agree that people make time for what's important. Some of my mom friends don't seem to make the time.

I actually did more reading when my kids were small than at any other time in my life except college (where as an English major I had assigned reading, too!). When the kids are little, you read to them, you read while you're nursing, you read while they nap, you read while they play in the park, you read while they play at the library, you read parenting books, etc. At least, I did!

thanks for visiting tea reads -

Dewey - That's exactly what I did. I spent 2 hours at the ice rink while SurferGirl practiced and was the only mother reading a book. The rest were on their phones.

Teabird - That sounds like fun!
